Your Will Be Done

This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.—Matthew 6:9-10

I recently sat in a coffee shop with a friend. As we caught up on life and shared some laughs and prayer requests, she said something so simple yet so impactful that it stopped me in my tracks.

You see, both of our husbands travel for work. We often bond over this shared experience of navigating their absence and life as newlyweds while also feeling all the emotions that come with it—sadness that our partners often miss moments with us, fear they won’t come home, worry that something will go wrong in their absence, and so on.

As we talked, she shared that she’s been praying and meditating on the words “your will be done” from Matthew 6, especially as she sends her husband off to work. As she said this, I realized the Lord was speaking the exact words I needed to hear directly into my heart.

Your will be done. Hmm. Do I really want God’s will for my life? Do I trust God’s will? Can I let go of my perceived control to find freedom in what God has in store for me? Do I trust God with my husband? With my family? With my health? With my finances?

Maybe you can relate. Surrender is hard. Letting go is hard. Trusting God’s perfect will, not just that His will be done, but that it will be greater than what we hope and plan for. This can be difficult, especially when you are in the thick of life. Whether it’s standing helplessly by as your baby lies in a hospital bed, watching your teen pull of out of the driveway alone for the first time, or moving your young adult into their college dorm, it can be debilitating to sit in the what if’s, the worry of what could be and what could happen. It can be challenging to release the control we think we have and choose to trust God in those moments.

But here’s the truth that the prayer “your will be done” helped me see. This is a heart issue. I am slow to release control. I am slow to trust God and His will. And deep down, there is an idol I have to face, one that says my will and knowledge is better than the One who created me. Oof. That’s humbling.

This is where the Lord is so abundantly kind and gracious. He meets me and you in these struggles to let go of control. Over and over again Scripture invites us to experience His peace and safety. In the Psalms we’re encouraged to "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you.” In Philippians we’re told, “Do not be anxious about anything.” In Isaiah we’re reassured, “Fear not, for I am with you.” God gives us permission to lean into Him, to hand Him our fears, to rest in Him and to trust that His will, as mysterious and challenging as it might be, is always good.

So, I’ve started praying, “your will be done.” It’s not easy, but I’m learning His will is always better than mine. God can care for my husband better than I can. He can provide peace and comfort in ways I don’t know how for my family. He puts the breath in my lungs and provides all that I will ever need. That’s what He’s always done and what He will continue to do. For me and for you. We may not always see or understand, but we can always trust that Our Father is leading us exactly where He wants us to go.
