Waiting on God's Perfect Timing

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.—Psalm 27:14 I don’t always know or understand God’s perspective on situations I face in my life. Recently, God used a dream to help remind me of this truth. While my dreams typically seem like nonsense, this one felt different. So I grabbed my prayer journal and outlined what happened: I am in the middle of a divided road on a median, preparing to cross. I look and see a car so far in the distance that I'm not concerned. With confidence, I stepped off the curb to begin crossing. Immediately I could feel something was wrong. My legs felt heavy and slow. I am stumbling and seem to be making no progress. I am trying so hard. How am I not making any progress? Beyond my confusion, I began to panic as the once-distant car drew closer to me. Now the situation has changed entirely. I am no longer progressing with my original plan. And now I am stuck, unable to help myself. At the very last possible moment, I find myself lifted straight in the air as the car speeds by beneath me. Then I am gently lowered back to earth and am able to continue crossing. This dream felt like an invitation from God to notice my tendency to rush ahead and act quickly. Sometimes I’m so confident in my own plans and vision that I forget to consult with Him before moving forward. We humans aren’t famous for our patience. How many times in the Bible do we see that years—centuries, even—can pass before God fulfills some of His promises? Time and again we see Him acting at just the right time to meet a need. Never too early; never too late. His timing is always working for our good, even when we can’t see the whole story. In my dream, I thought it was a fine time to cross the road, yet I was prevented from doing it. Of course, I found myself frustrated by my inability to make progress. But what I couldn’t see in that moment was that God had His own reasons for preventing me from reaching my goal. He needed me to wait until His sovereign hand guided me safely to where I needed to be. I don’t know why He waited until the last possible moment to intervene. Sometimes He asks us to wait longer than makes sense to us. We may never learn the reason at all. But I know He can see more than I can and we can trust that His timing is perfect and good. I can think of jobs that I interviewed for that seemed perfect, and when I didn’t get offered the position, I was deeply disappointed. Or when my husband and I were hunting for a home and I fell in love with one six months too early for our finances. Now I know that there were better options for me a bit further down the road. The key then—and today—is to wait on God’s perfect timing. We have a wise God who is all-knowing and all-seeing and exists outside of our very limited perception of time. When we don’t get the results we’re expecting, remember to trust that God’s got this handled. He may not be saying no, He may simply be saying “not yet.” We just need to wait patiently and find security in His perfect timing, trusting that He’s actively working out a good plan for us.
