Life is a Trust Fall with God

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.—Psalm 20:7

Trust God.

I have a sign in my office with these two words placed where I can see them every day. Because if there is a mantra I need to keep at the forefront of my mind, it is this one.

See, I tend view things with a "glass half empty" mindset. When I look at what's happening in the world, my first instinct is to zero in on everything that's wrong: the division. The anger directed at each other. The rebellion and hostility toward God. When I catch myself in that negative spiral, things can feel overwhelming and hopeless. 

“Why is this happening God?!” I lament. “Why here? Why now? Why me?”

But then I sit at my desk and the answer is right there on the wall.

Trust God.

While it’s easy to slide into moments of despair about the world around us, there is something we must always remember; God is over it all. He is always in control. Nothing happens outside of His permission or will. In fact, God will use everything that has happened in the past, is happening now, or will happen in the future to carry out his plan. A plan that will ultimately point to and reveal His goodness, glory, and love for all of us.

Of course, how God carries out His plan isn’t always what we might want or prefer. It might even feel downright awful. Just look at the Israelites and the years of hardship they faced as they made their way to the Promised Land. Joseph probably would have preferred to miss the part about his brothers selling him into slavery before becoming second in command in Egypt. I can certainly think of many painful moments in my own journey that I wish never happened...but then I realize without them I would likely not be the follower of Christ that I am today. 

In other words, God’s ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8). His plans are not our plans, and His paths are not our paths. In those moments when we want to shake our fist at the heavens and question God’s intentions, remember this: Even God carried out a plan that put Himself through an incredible amount of pain and suffering so that His amazing grace could rescue the rest of us. 

So, yes. Trust God. When the world feels overwhelming, center your heart on these two words. No matter how heavy life may seem, God has not and will never abandon us. In fact, He’s creating something greater than we can ever imagine. And when we shift our gaze from the chaos around us and fix our eyes on Christ, despair loses its grip and hope rises in its place.
