Holy Week Reflection - Day 2

Verse: John 11:25 - “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

As we continue our journey to the cross and resurrection of Jesus, we come across this story with Mary, Martha, and Lazurus. Jesus is sitting with Mary and Martha as they grieve the death of their brother Lazurus, not knowing that Jesus will resurrect him from the grave. In Martha’s sadness, she blames Jesus for not being able to save her brother yet acknowledges Jesus’ power and knows that God can move mountains. Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever had conflicting emotions? Have you seen sadness coexist with gratitude and faith?

Jesus replies to Martha’s sentiment with our verse of the day and allows Martha to confirm her faith and to be reminded of the truth. This statement that Jesus makes, that He is the resurrection and the life, was true for Lazurus. Lazurus’ only hope was in Jesus, and not long after Jesus’ reply to Martha, He did choose to raise Lazurus from the dead. How hopeful it is to know a God who can restore physical life, but promises life to us even after the grave. Jesus saw Mary and Martha in their grief, was moved with compassion, and did the miraculous. It won’t be long before we see even more clearly, how Jesus is the resurrection and the life on Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday!

In this season, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one, a job, health, finances, whatever it may be, take heart in knowing the Lord sees you. It is okay to grieve, to be sad, even angry, but we know the God who is in control, and we can trust Him, just as Mary and Martha trusted in Jesus for their life and the life of their brother. The Lord keeps his promises, and He does not change, so there is so much hope to hold in these moments and life everlasting with our Father.

Challenge:

1. Is there something in your life that you are grieving right now? How can you sit with God in your grief and trust Him with all of your emotions?

2. How does knowing that Jesus is the way to resurrection and new life with Christ affect how you live?
