God Holds Everything Together

The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.—Psalm 103:19

It’s 8:25pm. My flight from Dallas to Grand Rapids just took off, and to my left I see the setting sun. The clear sky illuminated with yellows and pinks. It’s as if God took a paintbrush across the sky to create a masterpiece, and I have a front row seat. As the plane reaches its cruising altitude, the night sky begins brightening with the evening stars and city lights glowing below between the passing clouds. By the time we fly over Indianapolis, the sky has turned dark. Not just with the darkness of night, but with the threat of severe weather. Orange and yellow light appear as I watch a thunderstorm flashing in the distance. The pilot comes on and advises all of us to buckle our seat belts and to expect turbulence as we begin our descent into Grand Rapids. And, as I witness it all unfolding from seat 15A, I am struck by this simple thought: The Lord reigns above it all.

Whether it’s the setting sun in Dallas, the stars over the plains, the storm in Indianapolis, or even my thoughts during the journey home, in a matter of three hours I watched everything go through a process of change—a reminder that the Lord is sovereign, and He has authority over every part of it. Nothing is hidden from Him. He knows all, sees all, and rules over all. Every detail is under His sovereign hand. The Bible tells us "For by Him all things were created... whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:16-17). Whether beautiful or stormy, God holds all the pieces of the world together.

How comforting is this truth? In a world that tells us we need to manage everything on our own, to be self-sufficient, and to be the authors of our own destinies, there is a God who truly can control all things. The Bible is full of examples of this. From human disobedience and rebellion to miracles and to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, God was and is the author of it all. God is not distant or removed from the details of our lives. He is not surprised by the setting sun or the approaching storm. He’s not surprised by that diagnosis your mom is facing, the career path your kids chose, or the unexpected decision your spouse made. All of it, all the pieces of your story, are under God’s care. He’s the only one who can truly hold it all together, uniting every detail for good. Praise God for that!

So, wherever you are on your journey—whether bright skies of joy or stormy waves of sorrow—the Lord remains the same and is ruler over everything. Be encouraged that there’s nowhere you can flee from His presence, no choice you’ve made that He doesn’t know about, and no circumstance that falls outside of His control. He is the great author of the world’s incredible story. Find peace in knowing that every step you take, every moment you experience, and every situation you face is aligned with His plan, directed by His wisdom, and shaped by His unending love. Just like what I witnessed out the window from seat 15A, He truly is creating a masterpiece, and your life is a beautiful brush stroke within it.

Encouraging Words From Your Bible

Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: he came to serve, not be served – and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage.
