Chicago Commander Eric Windstrom was introduced as the next Chief of Police in Grand Rapids.

He says he wants to be the most tired person in Grand Rapids over the next few months.

Chicago Commander Eric Windstrom is the next Chief of Police in Grand Rapids.  Windstrom says he would love to meet with every neighborhood association, as well as other community groups to better learn of the conditions in Grand Rapids.

Windstrom rose through the ranks as a beat officer, eventually working in the administration as well as an attorney in Chicago.  Windstrom headed up several departments, all with exemplary work according to records.

Grand Rapids City Manager Mark Washington says the search was exhaustive and all the finalist were well qualified for the position.  Windstrom stood out for his efforts in community policing, listening to citizens, and working with community organizations to promote safety.

Windstrom also has personal experience with the incarceration system as a family member was arrested and jailed.  Windstrom says it gave him a perspective that was unique.  He says there are instances where someone could be better served without going through the incarceration system.  However, Windstrom says, there are others who need to be separated from society, due to the nature of the crimes.

Winstrom will replace Chief Eric Payne, who announced his retirement last year.
