6/10/21 - WCSG's Travelin Together - Stearn's Beach Ludington

Posted by: Joel Hill | Thursday, June 10th, 2021 ( 5:59am)

As part of our 'WCSG Travelin Together' series, we’re exploring one of the best beaches in the United States and it's less than two hours away.

Voted as #51 of the best beaches in the United States, Stearns Beach in Ludington has a half-mile of groomed, soft-white sand beach, and its largely free of rocks.  Jen Toomey with the city of Ludington says a walk across the smooth sand is unlike any other.

“It’s very soft, the kids love it.  We see lots of sand castles being built, and holes being dug to fill your siblings with.  It’s like a big sandbox!”

The beach, which is less than eight blocks from downtown Ludington, offers free parking, two concession stands, playground sets, kayak and standup paddleboard rentals as well as wheelchair access to the water.  You can also walk out to the lighthouse.  Toomey says it’s a great vantage point.

“One of the fun things to do that everyone enjoys, I don’t think it matters what age your are, is to walk out to the lighthouse.  So on days when it is safe to do so, you can walk out onto the pier, you can climb the lighthouse, there’s a gift shop out there.  It’s a great spot to watch the Badger come in.”

If you need a break from the sun, there’s a shaded park just steps off the sand.  There are picnic tables, grills, and enough space to lay a blanket out and catch a quick nap.

Later this summer, the beach and Ludington will be home to several festivals, including the JC Freedom Festival.  The July 4th activities come complete with a parade and fireworks at dusk.  The beach is a great vantage point to view the show.
