Holy Week Reflection - Day 3

Verse: Hebrews 12:2 - “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Throughout Jesus’ life, part of His mission on earth, was to experience the fullness of humanity, to feel, know and relate to the emotions of a human being. It is possible to go through seasons of life where God seems distant, far off, and so holy that maybe He seems unapproachable. It can be easy to think that God can not relate to the experiences and things we feel in our everyday lives, but He really is a God who is close to us, who cares about the details, and knows exactly how we feel.

Do you have days where you feel like your home, your work, or your relationships are exhausting and draining? Are there times in your life where you have just wept because nothing else makes sense? Have you felt the joy that comes from being obedient and disciplined to complete tasks around the house or checking items off your to do list? If you said yes to any of these, then you are in good company! Jesus often went away to be alone to pray and be with the Father after a long, exhausting day. He knows the joy it is to complete the task, to endure the cross and to do it with obedience and diligence. And He has experienced the deepest sadness and grief right alongside us.

Jesus had moments of rejoicing, empathy, compassion, sadness, and even experienced temptation and pain, yet He did not let these things consume him. He fixed His eyes on the Father and trusted that what the Father had promised would come to fruition. We will see this even more clearly in a few days when we look at the cross and resurrection of Jesus, but He died the death that we deserved, rose again, and sits at the right hand of God in heaven just as the Father had promised. It is so sweet to know that the Lord understands our weakness, but gives us the grace and confidence we need to run to Him in time of need, in every emotion we feel, and in every circumstance.

So let us be faithful. Let us trust God’s promises. Whatever season you are in, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus who is your redemption and reward!

Challenge:

1. What ways can you fix your eyes on Jesus this week?

2. How can you find comfort in knowing that Jesus has felt the exact emotions that you feel everyday?

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
