God is Our Dwelling Place

Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.—Psalm 90:1-2

About two years ago, I experienced a season of significant change full of many new things. Things that, at the time, were completely overwhelming. Within a month, I quit a job, got married, moved to a new home in a new city, started a new job, and found a new church with new friends—which, has anyone tried to make new friends as an adult? It’s hard work! It was a month that felt unsteady, unknown, and unpredictable wherever I looked.

Everything that was comfortable and safe about my life was suddenly so different. Some of the most simple tasks, like filling my car up with gas or grocery shopping, were challenging because I didn’t know how to get anywhere without GPS. For all the West Michiganders out there, trying to understand the difference between US-131, I-96, M6, and the S Curve? What in the world is an S curve? Learning local lore is hard work!

However that month, as hard as it was, taught me something important: that the God I love and serve never changes. I learned that the Lord really is my dwelling place no matter where life takes me. God is not found at an address nor in a specific city, but in a relationship. God is always with me, and in Him I can find safety, security, and a sense of home. I can rest in His familiarity and unchanging presence. Whether in prayer, in Scripture, in worship; it’s the same God, yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Finding comfort in God’s permanence served as a reminder that I could apply the same concept to other areas of my life. Instead of looking at all the tasks, the challenges, and the overwhelming differences I had to face, I needed to note the things that would be the same. So that’s what I did. I may not have known how to get to Target, but there was still a Target in my new city. I may not have known exactly what married life looked like, but I was learning each day by the side of the man I love. I may not have had friends yet in this new place, but I could always pick up the phone and call old ones. By shifting my gaze on the One who never changes, God also helped redirect my focus on parts of my life that were familiar so that I could find peace even in the uncertainty.

In hindsight, that time of great change led to some incredible joys. The things I once feared are now some of the greatest blessings of my life. My job has given me the opportunity to encourage others in their walk with Christ while growing creatively and spiritually. My husband and I have found a wonderful rhythm as a married couple, and I love that we can continue to discover new things in West Michigan together. The community around us has served as an intentional support system and has walked with us through lots of transitions. All of it has led me to a deeper relationship with the Lord, giving me a greater appreciation for the journey through life’s ever-changing seasons.

So, if you are experiencing a time of change, reflect on the things that are familiar to your routine. Take some time to remember God’s character, to rest in His dwelling place, and to know that from everlasting to everlasting, He remains the same no matter where life takes you.

Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty!
