God Is Making Us New

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!—2 Corinthians 5:17 

It was a normal fourth of July morning. Sun shining. Birds chirping. Waffles cooking. The day was off to a great start...until it wasn’t. I heard my husband call from upstairs saying, “Ah Megan, the roof is leaking.” Have you ever had one of those moments? Where life is seemingly going great, and then suddenly everything changes in an instant?  

Now, it wasn’t totally a surprise. You see, we just bought a 100-year-old house and she needs some love (I mean, the roof is leaking!), but we were really hoping we could go one more year before having to replace it. So when we found water streaming into our bedroom, it was...well...a little disappointing. Our holiday weekend with a perfect start changed instantly as we frantically started looking for buckets and towels to clean up the water. 

Only days later, I watched as a team of roofers stripped the shingles away. All day I saw debris flying into a dumpster; old roofing tore off to make room for the new.  

I’ve been reflecting on this. It really made me think of my own journey with Christ. As I have followed Him over the years, there has been a stripping away of my old identity just like the old roof. The old way of acting self-sufficient. The old way of relying on my own strength. The old way of meeting my own needs before others. The old way of turning to the things of the world to comfort, satisfy, or control my life. All of my old ways of living are thrown away as I know and love Christ more.  

And slowly, as I continue the process of building my life to be covered in Christ, He gives me new ways to live in place of the old ones. Instead of trusting myself and my own strength, I can go to God in prayer to find what the strength needed to face the day. Instead of acting selfish and acting in the interest of myself, I can serve, love, and care for others. Instead of looking to relationships, social media, or a performance review for my worth, I can read and memorize Scripture to know who I am in Christ. Thanks to Jesus, I can find protection from old patterns that once tried to seep into my life. 

Now, that doesn’t mean I’m perfect. Far from it. But it does mean that the old ways no longer define who I am, how I function, and what I do. It means I am in process of becoming more and more like Christ as He does the work to restore and redeem what’s been broken in me. He is the one reconciling all things for His good and His glory over time.  

These moments in our lives, when everything changes in an instant—like my leaking roof, or a health scare, or a shift in a friendship, anything that may throw you off your tracks and the plans you thought you had for yourself—sometimes, just sometimes, God uses those moments to bring something new to life. Just as the roofers put my roof back together one shingle at a time, the Lord is piecing me together and He’s doing the same for you. Restoring, redeeming, breathing new life into us every day that we walk with Him. He can use those moments to reveal our hearts; to reveal who and what we really put our trust in. He can use these moments to teach us and humble us. It doesn’t mean it’ll be easy—it may be hard or messy or costly—but being made new in Christ means trusting the new roof He’s placed over us; steady, secure, and ready to weather whatever may lie ahead.
