Do Not Be Afraid, Be Faithful

And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.—Luke 12: 29-32

Every morning I turn on the morning news while I make breakfast before work. And every morning I hear the same thing: reports of another tragic death, another weather disaster, another reminder about how deeply broken our world is. To make matters worse, as I write this, our country is in the thick of election season. Regular commercials are replaced with an endless stream of political ads attacking various candidates for various reasons, and I find myself growing increasingly hopeless over the state of things around me.

But lately, God keeps drawing my attention back to these words: Do not be afraid.

It’s so easy to allow fear and anger to have me believing that fixing what’s broken is completely dependent on us—through what we do, what we say, how we vote—but the truth is that it is God alone who has control over all things. While yes, God gives us the freedom to make decisions that may fall outside of His desires for us, nothing we do happens without His permission or will. Exactly how human free will fits with God’s sovereignty is beyond my understanding, but what I can trust is that when something happens – including something bad or painful – the fact that it occurred at all tells me that God is using it to carry out His ultimate plan of restoration.

What peace I find when I remember that! No matter what I hear on the news or see on TV or read on social media, I must remember that God is in control, and He will use human decisions – good and bad – to fulfill His promise to make all things new. I may not always see or understand how He’s going to do this, but I need only to look to God’s word to see that He has never failed to fulfill His promises to His people.

That being said, while it’s a relief to know that God is the one directing everything to accomplish His purposes, that doesn’t mean I should sit back and watch everything unfold, believing I have no part to play in the outcome. Yes, God is sovereign, but His promise to restore all things is a story that includes me…and you! See, the Holy Spirit lives inside every believer, and He empowers us to bring a piece of God’s Kingdom to the world at the exact time and location He’s placed us in. We do this every time we pray, serve, encourage, and even vote. However, I need to remind myself often that even if policies and laws are enacted that I support (or don’t), policies and laws do not change the human heart. Only Jesus can do that. And our mission as believers is to point people to the only One who can truly save us from hurt, pain, injustice, division, and—let’s face it—ourselves.

So when, like me, you find yourself anxious about what is happening in the world, remember this: do not be afraid. Our ultimate hope is not in circumstances changing, leaders succeeding, or problems being solved. Our hope is in Christ, who will one day return and make all things new. But as we wait, God invites each one of us to be part of His work of restoration by reflecting His Kingdom through the way we love Him and love others. Never underestimate what God can do through a kind word, a faithful prayer, an act of compassion, or a simple conversation about Jesus. We may not be able to change the whole world, but by His Spirit, each of us can change the heart of someone right in front of us.
