7/21/22 - Workers Erroneously Paid Unemployment Won't Have to Pay Back Money

Thousands of Michigan residents were erroneously paid 52 million dollars but state says confusion between Feds and State officials were the problem.

It's a huge bill that's being forgiven because the error was on the fault of the government.

That's the claim after it was announced another seven thousand people who were erroneously awarded unemployment benefits will not have to pay them back.  In this instance, the state erased 52 million dollars in repayment bills in another round of unemployment insurance forgiveness. 

The state says the shifting rules between the federal and state governments led to people falsely filing for benefits.

Michigan has already forgiven the bills after unemployment claims started filing in in 2020 as the pandemic took its toll on businesses.  The state reports that in the last three months alone, they've forgiven close to 485 million dollars in unemployment insurance bills from over 62-thosuand claims.  More forgiveness is also expected.
