File photo. Chief Eric Payne plans to retire soon. City leaders today received an update on the search for his replacement. 9/28/21.

City leaders heard an update on the search process for a new police chief.

Grand Rapids will begin a search for a new police chief this upcoming month.  Doug Matthews, assistant city manager, says the initial phase will begin in October with a job profile.

"That includes engagement with the community.  That's the full community so we have business representatives, we have private sector, public sector, non-profit community representatives, neighborhood representatives we will reach out to."

Matthews says they’ll ask those groups what they are interested in seeing in a new chief.

That profile will be used to help recruit candidates for the post.  A list of candidates could be prepared by January.  An outside agency with experience in locating potential candidates will be hired to conduct the search.

Chief Eric Payne announced his retirement this past month.

For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
