6/17/22 - Police Identify Victim of Last Night's Deputy Involved Shooting

A 22-year old man has been identified in an incident that started with a traffic stop near Wayland.

A 22-year old Comstock Park man has been identified as the deceased following an incident with an Allegan County Sheriff’s Deputy. 

Joseph Maverick Nagel was the only occupant of the vehicle pulled over last night.  It started around 10 last night with the traffic stop that appears to have escalated into an altercation.  The deputy was the only law enforcement officer on the scene.  He was taken to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries but has been released.  The Deputy is on administrative leave following the shooting. 

State Police out of Wayland will conduct the investigation into exactly what happened.  At this point its known that this began with a traffic stop that turned into an altercation.  Police say no body or dashboard camera was taken of the incident.
