Beaumont, Spectrum announce the start of new health system and will operate 22 hospitals across the state.

 — Two of the state’s largest health care providers have merged to form a new health system.

Grand Rapids-based Spectrum Health and Southfield-based Beaumont Health today will begin operating together.  They will temporarily be known as BHSH System.

Between the two they will combine to have 11,500 physicians and operate 22 hospitals and more than 300 outpatient locations across Michigan.

The new system’s board includes seven members appointed from Spectrum and seven from Beaumont Health.

Spectrum Health President and Chief Executive Tina Freese Decker will serve in the same roles at BHSH System.

Beaumont Health Board Chair Julie Fream will serve as the system’s incoming chair.

At this point there does not appear to be plans to close any buildings or lay off any workers.  There is currently a shortage of hospital workers.
