A deal was announced to avert a major rail strike that would have impacted the entire United States.

-Rail companies and unions negotiated for 20 hours and then early this morning they struck a tentative agreement to avoid a strike.

Businesses feared that would have led to severe supply chain disruptions.

Amtrak announced yesterday that they would cancel all long-distance passenger trains that were scheduled for today because of a potential freight rail shutdown.

Amtrak is not a party in the labor dispute and does not carry freight but the move was more of a fallout from lingering disagreements between freight rail unions and railroad companies.

Unions have said the industry is in crisis, with companies taking huge profits while the workforce shrinks.
