In 2022, Gerold Prather was having fun at the beach, and then the situation turned life-threatening.

Gerold Prather dove into 62-degree water to save the life of a 16-year-old who was drowning in Lake Michigan in the summer of 2022.

According to reports, Prather,a 22-year old from Kalamazoo, was attending a party along the lakeshore when he heard the cries for help coming from the 16-year-old and his friends who were struggling in the water.

“With difficulty, Prather first pushed the boy toward the beach and then positioned him on his back and towed him to a point about 50 feet from shore where, tiring, Prather shouted for help. Another man waded into the lake and helped Prather and the boy get to the beach. First responders took the boy to the hospital.” That was a part of the report in the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.

Prather will receive the Carnegie Medal the highest civilian honor for heroism in North America. Congressman Bill Huizenga will present the medal in his congressional office.
