06/30/25 - Kent County Man Drowns in Wabassis Lake; Sheriffs Remind Residents of Boating Safety

A local man appears to have gone swimming, but never resurfaced. Sheriffs are reminding residents to be safety conscious.

Some sad news to report; Kent County Sheriffs have recovered a person who went swimming in Wabassis Lake over the weekend. The person has only been identified as a 62-year-old Greenville man who disappeared Sunday evening. Crews resumed the search this morning. Sheriffs are reminding residents to wear life preservers and the importance of boating safety. 

Some of those tips include: 

Swim with a buddy 

Wear life preserver vests 

Know your limitations 

Designate a responsible adult to supervise children 

Avoid alcohol consumption 

Be aware of your surroundings 

 

When it comes to boating safety: 

Take a boating safety course before heading out to the water 

Make sure there is a spotter 

Avoid overloading the boat 

Check the weather forecast before you head out
