We haven't seen travel numbers like this in over a decade.
Memorial Day travel is expected to break records.
More Americans are expected to travel this Memorial Day holiday than we have seen since the early 2000's. AAA is predicting over 45 million Americans will go more than 50 miles from home for the holiday. AAA’s Christina Griffiths says it’s an important sign.
"So we're now kind of back on track with that trend of increased travel each year that was going on since 2002."
The numbers represent a 1.4 million increase over last year, and beats the record for travelers set back in 2004 with 44 million Americans taking to the road. Travel doesn’t appear to be extravagant. Most are going to hit the road for a nearby beach or visit with family.
Busiest times for travel are expected to be in the afternoons of the Memorial Day holiday week. Plan to travel in the morning hours to avoid crushing traffic jams.
