The survey conducted through Corewell Health identifies some limitations to the survey, but does track near national trends.
A new survey finds a growing number of children in Kent County could be at risk.
Four in 10 children in Kent County are at risk of being overweight or obese. The Kent County Health Department released a new report that identifies obesity as a growing health concern. Those in the 10 to 12 year age group (37.8%) and those children in the 13 to 15 year age group (38.2%) had the highest combined percentage of overweight and obese BMI categories. The lowest percentage of overweight and obese BMI
categories was in the 4 to 6 year age group (17.3%), followed by the 7 to 9 year age group (31.2%).
ZIP Codes 49507 and 49509 in Grand Rapids and Wyoming, had the highest percentage of visits where patients were identified as obese.
The report states there are some conditions for the survey. The study only reports on children 4-17 who entered a Corewell Health facility for a well-child visit. According to the National Institute for Healthcare Management (NIHCM), in Michigan, 32.6% of children ages 0 to 17 are overweight or obese, compared to a national average of 31.3%.
