GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A winter storm is bringing wet snow, slippery roads and school closings to southern Michigan, with up to 9 inches forecast in parts of the state.
The National Weather Service says winter storm warnings were in effect for much of the southern Lower Peninsula on Friday. About 5 to 8 inches was expected in areas including Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.
In Kent County's Tyrone Township, authorities say weather and speed likely were a factor in a crash that killed an 18-year-old driver Friday.
Parts of southeast Michigan could get up to 8 inches. The weather service says areas closer to Detroit and southwest of the city toward the Ohio border could get 2 to 5 inches. Crews were on the road early Friday to put down salt.
In the West Michigan area many schools are closed today.
The Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids has some delays and cancellations.
Consumers Energy says most likely there will be some power outages today due to the heavy wet snow that is falling.
The slippery roads are to blame for a number of accidents.
