Santorum, Paul, and Romney to MI

Feb 21st, 2012 - State News

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (AP) — Ron Paul's campaign says the Republican presidential candidate will visit Michigan for three days ahead of the state's Feb. 28 primary.

Paul plans to speak Sunday in Hudsonville at a meeting of small business owners. The event is at 4 p.m. at The Pinnacle and is sponsored by Terry Bowman, founder of the group Union Conservatives.

On Feb. 27, he's scheduled to visit East Lansing to address students and supporters at Michigan State University. That event starts at 4 p.m. at Concert Auditorium.

Paul's campaign says it will announce other campaign stops as plans develop.

DETROIT (AP) — Mitt Romney raised $6.5 million last month for his presidential bid.

Romney's campaign said Monday the former Massachusetts governor also had $7.7 million cash on hand.

The campaign says that since announcing his presidential bid last June, Romney has raised almost $64 million.

Romney is far ahead of his GOP rivals in fundraising. His team argues he's the only candidate with the money and organization to win the nomination and beat Democratic President Barack Obama in the fall.

Still, Romney spent millions to win the Florida primary and is facing tough contests on Feb. 28 in Michigan and Arizona. On March 6, Super Tuesday, he will have to compete across the nation in expensive contests.

MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is storming through western Michigan, a state native son Mitt Romney was counting on for a boost going into the Super Tuesday contests.

Voters loudly applauded Santorum's promise Monday to revive manufacturing and get rid of environmental regulations. The former Pennsylvania senator's message of religious and social conservatism clearly was resonating during his stop at a Holiday Inn in Muskegon.

Although Romney has a large advantage in money and organization in Michigan, many voters say Santorum is more in line with their values.

Santorum's popularity risks embarrassing Romney in his home state. Romney was counting on a strong finish in Michigan's Feb. 28 primary before the Super Tuesday contests a week later on March 6.

Romney was scheduled to campaign in Michigan on Tuesday.
