Mourning 19 firefighters

Jul 2nd, 2013 - National News

Investigators from several agencies are expected to go to the scene of a wildfire that killed 19 elite firefighters.

A Southwest fire official says the crew and its commanders were following safety protocols, and it appears that the fire's erratic nature simply overwhelmed them.

The fire in the town of Yarnell is zero percent contained and has burned some 8,400 acres.

More than 1,000 people turned out Monday in Prescott, Ariz., to remember 19 elite firefighters who died battling a wildfire. The tragedy all but wiped out the 20-member Granite Mountain Hotshots, which is based in Prescott. At a ceremony in a gymnasium, Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo said, "The Prescott Fire Department lost. The city of Prescott lost. The state of Arizona and the nation lost."
