8.4.14:   Water ban remains in Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — The water ban around Toledo, Ohio, continues this morning.

Mayor D. Michael Collins says the latest tests suggest the city’s tap water is probably safe, but he’s keeping in place the advisory against drinking or using it. Collins says the tests show a level of the algae-induced toxin he feels is “too close for comfort.”

The advisory affects more than 400,000 residents in northwestern Ohio and southwestern Michigan.

The National Guard and other agencies have been delivering bottled water.

Tests at one treatment plant showed readings for microcystin above the standard for consumption, most likely from algae on Lake Erie.
