Detroit area woman killed in Taliban attack - Jan 20th, 2014 - State
A Somalia-born woman who had been living in Hamtramck, was among the 21 people who were killed in a Taliban attack on a popular restaurant in Afghanistan last week. The 59-year-old Basra Hassan, had been working in Afghanistan as a nutrition specialist for UNICEF and had been setting up clinics for the treatment of malnutrition.
A civil society organization held an anti-terrorism demonstration outside of the restaurant over the weekend. They chanted slogans against terrorism as they laid flowers at the site of the attack.
