Fire at West Michigan business prompts evacuations - Jun 25th, 2013 - Local

— A fire at a West Michigan business that handles hazardous waste from universities and hospitals prompted officials to evacuate area residents.

Drug & Laboratory Disposal Inc. President Brent Walter says in a statement that the fire that was reported about 3 p.m. Monday in Plainwell was contained to a small part of the facility. MLive.com reports he says the response of fire crews and employees was "quick and professional."

No injuries were reported.

The fire about 35 miles south of Grand Rapids prompted officials to evacuate the business and residents within a quarter mile northeast of the facility. A gym at Plainwell High School was open for people forced from their homes and the American Red Cross was on hand to assist.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire re-kindled over night and more evacuations were necessary.
