Calley seeks more Netherlands trade - Apr 19th, 2013 - State

— Lt. Gov. Brian Calley says he's hopeful Michigan can do more business with the Netherlands in part because the alliance is so natural.

Michigan has a strong Dutch heritage in the western part of the state. Calley also says the Netherlands' economy, like Michigan, is reliant on manufacturing, tourism and agriculture.

The lieutenant governor led a delegation on a six-day investment mission to the country and returns Friday.

In a phone interview with The Associated Press, Calley said the Netherlands' deep-sea ports are important strategically to ship Michigan exports throughout Europe. He says the trip was key in starting to build relationships, and he and other officials pitched Michigan as a more business-friendly state than in the past.
