Grand Rapids police get license plate technology - Mar 14th, 2013 - Local

— The Grand Rapids Police Department has a new tool to help keep an eye on motorists in the city.

The department says automated license plate recognition equipment has been installed that scans license plates using cameras and runs the numbers through databases.

City Council approved the purchase of the equipment last year. Aims include improving the efficiency of officers, increasing the recovery of stolen vehicles, raising the number of arrests of people on outstanding warrants and boosting collection of parking tickets.

Grand Rapids bought four automated license plate recognition systems and they'll be used in four patrol service areas of the city.
