Debate Over Native American Mascots Takes Turn - Feb 15th, 2013 - State
Should Native American mascots at local high schools be banned? The debate has gone on for years but this week the Michigan Civil Rights Commission filed a resolution with the US Department of Education requesting all such mascots be removed.
That doesn’t sit well with Saugatuck Representative Bob Genetski. His district’s nickname is the “Indians.” He was more offended that the MCRC did “an end-around” over the public and has “deteriorated into more of an activist organization rather than holding up the efforts of state government.“
In the motion, the Michigan Commission stated that while the argument has largely surrounded ‘offensive nature of the mascots,’ there is now statistical evidence that Native American and minority students at schools with Native American mascots perform poorly in such environments.
