Commission meetings to be translated into Spanish - Jan 28th, 2013 - Local
— Grand Rapids plans to have City Commission meetings translated into Spanish for the audience in the meeting room as well as for television viewers.
Mayor George Heartwell made the announcement this past weekend at his State of the City address. Heartwell says it'll cost about $17,000 to enable Spanish translation of City Commission proceedings, plus the ongoing costs of having a translator at meetings.
Officials expect to put the plan into effect by the end of June.
Heartwell noted in his speech that Spanish is the second-most popular language in Grand Rapids. He says the translation program represents another step in an ongoing effort to improve delivery of city services to Spanish speakers.
