Hunters concerned about EHD - Sep 20th, 2012 - Local

A large crowd gathered Wednesday evening in Ionia and voiced their concern about the hundreds of deer that are dying in the woods as a result of EHD. The state's deer population has been hit especially hard this year because of the hot, dry summer. Ionia County is the hardest hit country in the state with more than 1,500 deer found dead in that county along.
Several hunters asked if this year's season should be canceled and the DNR reps said a number of licenses have already been sold and they really don't think that canceling it would be necessary. Humans cannot contract EHD. The epizootic hemorrhagic disease is found in deer that get it after they are bitten by an insect called the midge.
