— Authorities suspended their search in western Lake Erie for a 36-year-old Detroit-area man who disappeared after jumping into the water to save an 8-year-old boy.
Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone says a 28-year-old woman called 911 about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, saying her boyfriend and son were in the water off Estral Beach. It's in Berlin Township, Michigan, 30 miles northeast of Toledo, Ohio.
Malone says the couple and boys ages 3 and 8 were on an unanchored boat. They're from Oakland County's Waterford Township.
He says the 8-year-old wore a life jacket and jumped into the water but couldn't return to the drifting boat.
Malone says the man wasn't wearing a jacket when he jumped in. A passing boat rescued the boy, but the man remained missing Thursday.
Authorities have also scaled back their search for a 47-year-old Grand Rapids-area man who has been missing for several days in Lake Michigan.
The decision came Wednesday, on the same day that family and friends held a funeral for John English in Grand Rapids.
The Coast Guard and local authorities began searching the water off Ferrysburg on Sunday when English disappeared after jumping from a boat about 3 miles from shore.
Ferrysburg is about 10 miles south of Muskegon.
English worked as a paramedic and lived in Walker.
Ottawa County sheriff's Lieutenant Steve Kempker says searchers now will limit the search to shoreline and surface waters.
