Otsego funeral for soldier killed in Afghanistan

— A funeral is planned Thursday for a 38-year-old western Michigan soldier who was fatally injured in an insurgent attack in Afghanistan.
The funeral Mass for Sergeant Mark Schoonhoven is set for 11 a.m. at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego. Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego.
Schoonhoven was from Plainwell and was part of a unit out of Fort Carson, Colo. He arrived in Afghanistan in November and was wounded Dec. 15 when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in Kabul.
He died January 20th at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Schoonhoven's survivors include wife Tammie, six children, his parents and a brother.
Schoonhoven's remains will arrive at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek Airport later today. Visitation begins Wednesday at Winklel funeral Home in Otsego. The funeral will be held Thursday at St. Margaret Catholic Church and then his body taken to the Ft. Custer Cemetery in Augusta.
