UNDATED (AP) — For the second time this season and the 22nd time in major league history, there's been a perfect game.
San Francisco's Matt Cain authored the first perfect game in Giants history, striking out 14 Houston Astros in a 10-0 rout. Cain got pinch-hitter Jason Castro on a grounder for his 27th and final out with the sellout crowd of 42,298 roaring at AT&T Park.
Cain's gem follows Phil Humber's (UHM'-burz) perfect game for the Chicago White Sox on April 21. It's just the second time in baseball history there have been two perfect games in the same season -- Philadelphia's Roy Halladay and Oakland's Dallas Braden did it in 2010.
Cain got some help in his 125-pitch masterpiece.
Left fielder Melky Cabrera chased down Chris Snyder's one-out fly ball in the sixth, scurrying back to make a leaping catch on the warning track. Then, right fielder Gregor Blanco ran into right-center to make a diving catch on the warning track and rob Jordan Schafer for the first out of the seventh. The 27-year-old pitcher hugged Blanco in the dugout after the inning.
Afterward, Cain called the defensive plays "unbelievable catches."
It was the fifth no-hitter already this season, and the third in June. Johan (YOH'-hahn) Santana tossed the New York Mets' first no-hitter on June 1 and six Seattle pitchers shut down the Los Angeles Dodgers last Friday. Jered Weaver had one for the Los Angeles Angels on May 2.
