Hernandez and Mariners beat slumping Tigers 9-1

Apr 26th, 2012 - Sports News

DETROIT (AP) — Felix Hernandez allowed only a run in seven innings, rookie Alex Liddi hit a two-run homer and the Seattle Mariners went on to beat the slumping Detroit Tigers 9-1 Wednesday night.

Hernandez (2-1) gave up a solo homer to Brennan Boesch in the third and not much else. The right-hander yielded four hits and three walks, giving all of the free passes in the first.

Adam Wilk (0-3) allowed six runs and eight hits in just two-plus innings. The rookie gave up just two runs in each of his first two starts. After the game he was sent down to AAA Toledo.

The Tigers have lost five of six after starting 9-3. Seattle has won two straight after losing four in a row.

Jeremy Bonderman has surgery to attempt a comeback

DETROIT (AP) — Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman says he wants another shot at playing in the major leagues.

The 29-year-old Bonderman had elbow-ligament replacement surgery Tuesday to help him attempt to make a comeback next spring.

He hasn't pitched since 2010 when he was 8-10 and had a 5.53 ERA over 29 starts. His career record is 67-77 with a 4.89 ERA in 193 starts over eight seasons with the Tigers. The right-hander was 14-8 in 2006 and had a 3.10 ERA in three postseason starts to help Detroit reach the World Series for the first time since 1984.

A blood clot in his right shoulder stunted his career in 2008 after he had a winning record in three straight seasons.
