250-year-old windmill in SW needs more repairs

HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) — Officials say they've found rotted beams during renovation work on the 250-year-old DeZwaan windmill at Windmill Island Gardens in southwestern Michigan.
The Holland Sentinel and The Grand Rapids Press report that the rotted wood in the cap of the Holland landmark was found during work to rebuild its observation deck. Replacement of those beams was part of a five-year plan for the windmill, but they'll likely need to be replaced sooner.
It wasn't immediately known how much it might cost to replace the beams in the windmill, which was brought from the Netherlands in the 1960s.
Holland City Council in August approved spending roughly $235,000 to overhaul the observation deck. The former one lasted for more than 45 years.
The current construction project is set to be finished this month.
