Common Core – MI

4.27.16:  Lawmakers take another look at Common Core

(Mlive) –State legislation that would force Michigan to dump the Common Core was approved by a Senate committee Tuesday on a party-line vote.

Under the legislation, Michigan would be required to adopt standards used by Massachusetts – regarded as one of the top-performing education sates.

Sen. Patrick Colback, R-Canton, says repealing Common Core is important because the standards haven’t done enough to improve student achievement in Michigan.

Supporters of Common Core say the standards haven’t been in place long enough to gauge their success.

There is no word yet on when the measure will be considered by the Senate.  They are still focusing on the state budget and trying to resolve other outstanding issues, like the Detroit Public Schools rescue package.
